How does a funeral or memorial service for an atheist work?

I know someone that left money and a set of instructions to her best friend to hold a fancy party in her house with catering instead of a funeral. Is it basically what ever the people planning the event think is best? Are most atheists cremated? What happens if the person wanted to be buried? Do they burry them in a non-religious cemetery?
