Why was china contribution towards ww2 war effort unsuccessful?

China did tie up Japanese troops, and that was a good thing for the Allies. However, it was not near as successful as it could have been because Mao and Chiang were too busy trying to outmanuever each other instead of fighting the common enemy, as they had pledged to do.
