What is the best way to book air flights in canada through the internet?

I would like to book a flight to Sydney Australia from Edmonton for January and would like to return around march1 and I am having trouble booking anything past Feb 23. I would like to stop in honolulu for 4 days on my way there. There must be a way to book this without using a travel agent? Does any body have some help for me??
